Job Description:

Essential Job Functions:

Maintainers are responsible for the operation of the belt.  Must insure proper spacing of bags and monitor the buildup of bags on the carousels. Must ensure that the bags are aligned as required and/or immediately clear any resulting jams.  Maintainers are responsible for the manual movement of baggage in the event of a system outage. Must perform general cleanup of work areas in and around the conveyor equipment at a frequency required to maintain units free of trash, dirt, and debris. Maintainers perform semi-skilled maintenance under the supervision of a Mechanic or Supervisor.  Maintainers must be able to perform the following functions in variable weather and environmental conditions:

  • Bend, stoop, and crawl to work in tight, restricted areas. Push, pull, lift and carry components weighing up to 45 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb 10 – 25 ft. in height on ladders and perform duties.
  • Must have good coordination and good balance.
  • Must be able to stand 60 – 75% during an 8-hour shift.
  • Must be able to operate the controls for a forklift or man lift (authorized employees only) in congested area.
  • Drive vehicles weighing up to 3 tons on selected assignments in congested areas requiring good depth perception and ability to distinguish colors.
  • Must have good eyesight.
  • Work with color-coded wiring and other components which requires the ability to differentiate colors to include but not limited to red, green, yellow, blue, black, brown, white, and orange.
  • Work in a high noise-level environment and tolerates dust and jet fumes. (Dust masks and earplugs are provided).
  • Write and type legibly to complete forms/paperwork as required.
  • Must be able to communicate – verbal and written – in English and be understood by others.
  • Be familiar with computers and Microsoft based operating systems.
  • Must be able to regulate own work with little supervision and accomplish tasks on own.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts including weekends, holidays i.e. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and days off.  
  • Reports to work on a regular and timely basis.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to understand the operation of a BHS system and how to clear jams and reset photo-eyes
  • Ability to start up or restart a BHS system from the controls
  • Ability to move bags as needed to get them to the proper baggage makeup area.
  • Ability to communicate with the customer and the TSA when identifying and clearing jams
  • Responsible for work area appearance
  • Will report issues or concerns to Supervision
  • Will identify baggage hygiene issues to the customer so that they can address it with their check-in staff
  • Any additional skills would be a plus towards advancement 
  • Must be able to attain and sustain an Airport I.D. Badge
  • Pass a Pre-Employment Drug Screen
  • Pass a Background Check & have a Valid Driver’s License 

Job Types:

  • Full time position-40 hours per week; shift work on one of 2 shifts (times to be determined)
  • Will include weekends and holidays
  • Available for OT call outs as needed

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

The work environment/physical requirements described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job:

Technicians work in the secured baggage handling areas, in repair stations, or on airfields. They often must meet strict deadlines to maintain flight schedules.

Workers frequently bend, stoop, and reach from ladders and scaffolds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee frequently lifts and/or move items over 50 pounds with the help of teammates. They will be lifting parts and tools for extended periods of time and handling equipment such as conveyor systems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is working with and exposed to the baggage handling system, mechanical parts and vibration. The environment can also be loud because of aircraft engines and equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
